Your Moving Out Checklist
A moving out checklist for tenants should cover cleaning, admin, and removals. Start 4–6 weeks before your tenancy ends. Book your man and van or removals early. Schedule end of tenancy cleaning for after your belongings are gone.
Check-Out Cleaning Standards
End of tenancy cleaning should match the check-in report. Landlords and agents expect:
- Clean kitchen (inside appliances, worktops, cupboards)
- Clean bathroom (tiles, toilet, shower, sink)
- Vacuumed and mopped floors
- Wiped skirting boards and light switches
- Clean windows (inside at minimum)
Many tenants hire a professional end of tenancy cleaning company. Others do it themselves. Match the original condition to avoid deposit disputes.
Deposit Protection and Check-Out
Deposit protection schemes (DPS, TDS, MyDeposits) require a check-out inventory. Attend the check-out if you can. Take photos of each room. Note any pre-existing damage. If you disagree with deductions, use the scheme dispute process.
Notify your council about your move for council tax. Update your address with banks, insurers, and employers. Redirect your post.
Coordinate Cleaning and Removals
Move your belongings first. Then do the check-out cleaning so the property is empty. Book removals for the morning; schedule cleaning for the afternoon or next day. Leave keys as agreed and get a signed check-out report.
